Santos Salinas Castillo nació en 1971 en San Antonio (La Libertad, Perú), una pequeña aldea situada a gran altura en Los Andes, y fue el tercero de nueve hijos. Apartado de las influencias del mundo moderno, a la edad de cinco años ayudaba a su abuelo el rebaño. Para pasar el tiempo llevaban sus flautas (quenas y zampoñas), y Santos aprendió a tocar estos antiguos instrumentos. Estaba tan atraído por la música que cada vez que los músicos de la aldea tocaban en una fiesta, persudía al que tocaba el bombo para que le ayudase a llevar el parador, para que así pudiera estar con los músicos. Si no aparecía por su casa, sus padres sabían dónde encontrarlo. A los siete años se iba a cuidar el ganado él solo y tocaba las flautas durante horas para pasar el tiempo en la soledad de las montañas. Cuando sus padres se mudaron a la costa él se escapó y se escondió en la casa de su abuelo, ya que quería quedarse en Los Andes y tocar su música.
